How to adjust the starter
2021-12-29
When the starter shaft is in normal use but experiences poor engagement, noticeable impacts, or difficulty starting, or after maintenance work has been performed, necessary adjustments should be made. Adjusting the starter involves precisely coordinating the engagement of the drive gear with the moment when the starter switch is activated during operation.
(1) Adjusting the drive gear and thrust washer assembly. Push the movable iron core of the electromagnetic switch until the contact disc just makes connection, ensuring it remains stable. Then, measure the air gap between the drive gear and the end face of the thrust nut—it should fall within the range of 4–5 mm. If not, adjust by carefully screwing the connecting screw between the rocker arm and the iron core in or out as needed. Next, push the movable iron core all the way to its limit position; at this point, the air gap should reduce to 1.5–2.5 mm. If the measurement still doesn’t meet specifications, fine-tune the stroke-limiting screw on the rear cover until the correct clearance is achieved. However, on some foreign-made electromagnetic starter motors, adjustments may involve more than just the connecting screw. For instance, one method involves rotating the fork-shaped joint that connects the rocker arm to the movable iron core. Alternatively, adjustments can be made by adding or removing shims directly at the end face of the electromagnetic switch coil.
(2) Adjustment of the moment when the starter switch is engaged. When the electromagnetic switch first activates, the clearance between the drive gear and the end face of the thrust nut should be maintained within the range of 3.5–5.5 mm—indicating that the drive gear has already partially engaged with the flywheel ring gear but has not yet reached full meshing. If the switch engagement timing is incorrect, it can be adjusted by modifying the connecting bolt (adjustment rod) that links the fork lever to the movable iron core of the electromagnetic switch.
